When we got our first real look at Fable gameplay way back in 2023, many were surprised to see the British comedian Richard Ayoade not only lending his voice to the trailer but also being a character in the game.

He was seemingly pitched as a giant of the gardening world on that reveal, but thanks to the Xbox Developer_Direct 2026, we’ve got some interesting tidbits on what his fate will be.

If you’re not particularly a fan of Ayoade’s body of work or are simply a menace, yes, you can kill him, and it has long lasting effects on your Fable playthrough.

If you don’t spare Dave the Gardener, Albion’s landscape will change forever

Fable’s DNA is rooted in what choices you make throughout your playthrough, and with this reboot of the franchise, Playground Games is very much doubling down on that.

The “your choices change the world” concept goes further than that of what you’ve seen in Fable games of old, influencing not only what goes on in Albion but also how it looks.

When you encounter Dave the Gardener, your hero will be able to either spare or kill him. The latter produces long-lasting effects on your Fable journey.

First off, his corpse will literally be on hilly farmland, allowing you to keep seeing the result of your murdering escapade until you put the controller down. Second, it will both affect house prices and what the villagers think of your character, potentially squandering some relationships in the process.

As for what happens if you choose to spare Richard Ayoade’s character remains to be seen, and it may be that the better option is actually to off him due to potential problems, thanks to his giant potion antics.

Whatever the outcome, it’s fantastic to see Playground putting so much effort into the effects of choices like this.

With the framing that this will be one of many “choices like this” in the game, we’re sure there will be a bunch of opportunities to change Albion come Autumn 2026, whether that be for the better or worse.
