Does Fable have character creation, or are you stuck with a generic hero?

Fable has been in development for what seems like a lifetime, but 2026 is the year we finally get to dive back into Albion for more good (or evil) shenanigans.

When everyone first got a look at the potential protagonist, most thought how amazing it would be if a character customization feature was included this time around, just to make the experience that bit more tailored to your playthrough.

Thankfully, we’ve finally got an answer on if you can create a character in Fable, but it isn’t as clear-cut as you might think.

Can you create a character in Fable?

The short answer to whether you can have a custom character in Fable is yes, as confirmed by Playground Games in the Xbox Developer_Direct 2026.

However, as to how in-depth the character creation feature is a little up in the air.

This is because when Playground announced that you can make your own hero, the words used were that you can “pick from a range of different character heads.”

To us, this implies that the Fable character creator isn’t as robust as you might have hoped it to be. Instead, it might be more in line with the recent Arc Raiders where you’re able to change a preset face, switch body types, select hair and color, and swap clothing based on unlocked outfits.

Playground did also state that you can add “tattoos and scars,” which does add a little more flavor to character customization, but it is still going to be lacking compared to other big-name RPGs out there.

Even if the character creation side of things might not be as rich as you’d have hoped, at least it has one. We could have been in a place where you’re stuck with the same hero everyone else is playing as, and you’d really be disappointed then.
