Is Starfield multiplayer, or are you exploring space on your own?

starfield multiplayer

Starfield was the experience Todd Howard wanted to create for a number of years, bringing space into the fold, contrary to that of the usual high-fantasy medieval and post-nuclear settings from The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Even though most of Bethesda’s titles are single-player affairs, the jump to space lends itself to potential multiplayer with ships to control and a plethora of planets to explore.

If you’re wondering if you can jump into Starfield with another, whether that be in some form of multiplayer element such as co-op, we’ve got all you need to know.

Is Starfield co-op or online?

If you were hoping to experience Starfield with your friends and blast off across the Settled Systems together, the bad news is that the game does not have multiplayer.

Bethesda’s official FAQ is still very clear on this point, stating that Starfield is a single-player game. That means there’s no built-in online co-op, no PvP, and no way to officially crew one ship with your mates like you might have originally imagined before launch.

That answer also sadly hasn’t changed with the game’s newer updates or the port over to PlayStation. Bethesda has just announced another major wave of Starfield content, including the Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada expansion, but none of that has included multiplayer or co-op support.

Can you play Starfield multiplayer through mods?

This is where things get a little more interesting, but also a little messier. Starfield has a healthy modding scene on PC, especially through places like Nexus Mods, so it’s understandable that some might keep searching for a co-op workaround.

But as things stand, there is no multiplayer mod, and we don’t think anything will change that, even though some teams have tried to get the job done.

This may be a disappointment if you wanted a space RPG to share with friends, but you can look to the likes of No Man’s Sky to scratch that itch.
