ubisoft cancelations delays

The long anticipated remake of The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been canceled, while the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake has been delayed following the widespread cuts that the series’ developer, Ubisoft, is undergoing.

Ubisoft is undertaking a “massive reset” after being projected to lose over $1 billion this financial year due to sales not matching previous projections, and “rising development costs and greater challenges in creating brands.”

This involves the shutdown of Ubisoft studios in Halifax, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden, as well as the restructuring of their studios in Abu Dhabi, Helsinki, and Malmo.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is one of six games in development that Ubisoft have canceled

The game that was originally released in 2003 has had a troubled remake roadmap. The refresh was first announced in 2020, scheduled for a 2021 launch. However, after many delays, the last we heard was that the developers were “still deep in the game – exploring, building, and ensuring the sands move with purpose,” last summer. Sadly, it has lost the battle and will likely never see the light of day.

As for the rest of the cancelled games, we do not know the other titles that have had their plug pulled. The only thing we do have knowledge of is that one of them was going to be a mobile game.

Ubisoft’s restructuring means Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake has been delayed till 2027

Amongst the heavily packed Ubisoft statement, the company stated that an unannounced title initially planned for 2026 has been delayed to 2027. All the signs point to that unannounced title being the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake after Insider Gaming reported that the game was set to be released before March 31st, back in November.

A delay of the reimagining of a title we ranked as one of the best adventure games of all time is a huge disappointment amongst gamers, but at least it has not suffered the same fate as The Sands of Time, for now.
