The Roottrees Are Dead is making a grand return, fully remastered and expanded, promising a fresh wave of excitement for fans of armchair detective games. Set to launch on January 15, 2025, on Steam, this indie gem comes with a new look, an extended storyline, and refined gameplay mechanics that are sure to captivate both newcomers and longtime fans.

Originally a standout at the 2023 Global Game Jam, The Roottrees Are Dead gained critical acclaim for its innovative puzzle mechanics and retro internet aesthetic. Developed by Jeremy Johnston, the game invites players to step into the shoes of an internet detective, utilizing nostalgic '90s web tools to unravel family mysteries and uncover secrets from the past. This remastered edition not only enhances the original experience but also introduces a new expansion, “Roottreemania,” doubling the playtime to a hefty 20 hours.

The transformation of this cult classic into a premium experience was made possible through a collaboration with Toronto-based developer Robin “Evil Trout” Ward. With hand-drawn illustrations by board-game artist Henning Ludvigsen, known for his work on Star Wars and Clue, players can expect an immersive interface, intelligent hint systems, fully voiced cinematics, and a rebalanced set of puzzles.
