The latest instalment of Epic Games’ weekly mobile free games is the pixelated mystery and adventure thriller The Darkside Detective (2017), developed by Spooky Doorway.
The game follows Detective Francis McQueen and his partner Patrick Dooley in the fictional city of Twin Lakes, which has prominent supernatural criminal activity due to its links with the Darkside, the ghost world reflection of the city.
The nine tense-filled cases follow Detective McQueen and Dooley, the sole members of the police department’s Darkside Unit, as they attempt to find the cause of the Darkside and why it is troubling Twin Lakes.
Players have praised the juxtaposition between the dark cases and the satirical pop culture references that are throughout the playthrough, such as the case titles “Malice in Wonderland” and “Disorient Express”.
The game proved to be that popular, the sequel, The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark, was released in 2021.
