S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 just got a whole lot bigger with its Cost of Hope expansion

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has just become an even bigger experience, with GSC Game World launching the game’s first major expansion, Cost of Hope, today.

Available now on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, Cost of Hope adds a solid-sized new nonlinear adventure to the Zone, with GSC promising “dozens of hours” of additional gameplay alongside fresh locations, weapons, gear, characters, and plenty more things trying to kill you.

Once again, you’ll step into the boots of Skif, with the expansion’s story taking place alongside the events of Heart of Chornobyl.

This time around, the focus changes to the long-running conflict between two of the Zone’s oldest factions, Duty and Freedom. Duty believes the Zone represents a threat that needs to be contained and ultimately destroyed, while Freedom sees its strange properties as something that should be explored and potentially harnessed.

The two sides had managed to maintain a fragile peace, but as you can probably guess, that’s not going particularly well anymore.

Cost of Hope also opens up several new areas to explore, including the iconic Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the maze-like Iron Forest, as well as locations that you haven’t previously been able to go to.

Naturally, exploring them won’t exactly be a leisurely sightseeing trip. New weapons and equipment have been added to help Skif deal with mutants, anomalies, and the assortment of other horrors roaming the Zone.

Game Director and GSC Game World CEO Ievgen Grygorovych said the studio used the expansion as an opportunity to “experiment more,” taking creative risks and attempting things it hadn’t previously done with the series.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is included with the game’s Ultimate Edition, while everyone else can pick it up separately for $29.99/€29.99, subject to regional pricing.

If you’d convinced yourself you were finished with the Zone, unfortunately for your free time, it appears the Zone isn’t finished with you.
