The Monkey Island games are absolute classics, and must plays, even if you’ve not dipped your toe into point and click titles. Their creator, Ron Gilbert, is nothing short of a legend in the industry and, in a recent interview with Cressup, stated that he never stops “thinking about adventure games.”

However, before you jump out of your seat thinking he’s just about to drop a brand new, state-of-the-art point-and-click title, you may want to gracefully sit back down. Instead, Gilbert suggested that if he were to make another point-and-click escapade, it wouldn’t be for “nostalgic reasons,” as he really wants “to do something different with adventure games.”

What this actually means remains to be seen, but Gilbert did allude to creating a 2D-style adventure title “in a real 3D environment,” with a fully-fledged world to explore. Now this is something that gets our minds racing. Imagine a huge Monkey Island-esque world to explore, complete with classic humor and intrigue — it could be another one for the ages.

For now, though, we’ll have to be thankful Gilbert is still creating any game at all. His latest focus is on his new rogue-like RPG Death By Scrolling, which is definitely not a point-and-click game, but a very interesting take on the rogue-like genre, since it’s not just enemies you need to be aware of, it’s also the bottom of your screen that is constantly out to get you.

It keeps the retro look with its pixely aesthetic, but there appears to be some serious depth thanks to a plethora of perks and abilities to pick up, coupled with a variety of bizarre monsters to take down.

Death by Scrolling is ‘coming soon’ with no official release date at the time of writing. However, a 2025 launch is “still the plan,” so here’s hoping we’ll get our hands on it before the year is out!
