Pocket Mirror to get a makeover with commercial overhaul

Pocket Mirror was first released as a freeware title by AstralShift back in 2016, drawing inspiration from Japanese RPGs and classic stories such as Alice in Wonderland. Now the indie Japanese developer have teamed up with VisuStella and publisher Degica Games to create a remastered edition under the name Pocket Mirror: GoldeneTraum.

As before, players assume the role of a young woman on her “journey to find her true identity” though a place she does not recognise. Further story details are left intentionally sparse to discover for yourself, as the “bizarre and wondrous world” through which you travel will reveal its mysteries as you play. Although heavily story-driven, expect to find yourself confronted with many challenges to overcome, a cast of unique characters to meet, and plenty of puzzle-solving and exploration to complement the dark tale. There is also a brand new ending to find, to go the six endings retained from the original.

For GoldeneTraum, the developers have been keen to “keep the original experience” of Pocket Mirror intact whilst improving on the presentation and execution. There are over a hundred unique environments to explore, each updated with highly detailed, anime-style pixel art featuring elaborate gothic-inspired decorations, vivid colours and moody lighting effects, though there will also be the option to play the game in the “classic art style” of its predecessor instead. New animated video sequences will be added as well, along with an original soundtrack to accompany the action.

The remastered game now has a Steam page for wishlisting. No specific launch date has yet been announced, but it's listed as “coming soon” for Windows PC. While you wait, those interested can find the original free version still available for download on itch.io.
