Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes us back to Lumiose City for another run around on Kalos soil.

While a lot of Pokemon return from both the X and Y era and other generations, there was no way to secure the legendary that started it all — Mewtwo.

Now, though, with the latest Pokemon Legends: Z-A update, Mewtwo has become available, but not in the traditional way you’d might expect.

How to get Mewtwo in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

If you want to add the classic legendary Pokemon that is Mewtwo to your party in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you’ll have to do more than just head to a cave and throw a ball at it.

Instead, you have a few more hoops to jump through, starting with accessing a special Mystery Gift called Project M.

To do so, you will have first needed to complete the story for Legends: Z-A. After doing so, open up the menu and head over to the Link Play option.

In here should be a Mystery Gift tile which when clicked, should allow you to hit the ‘Get via Internet’ button. Within this section should be the Project M option which you’ll need to select.

After receiving the Gift, you’ll be notified that an extra side mission will be available but you will need to meet the conditions in order to start it.

There’s no visible marker on the map for where you need to go for this but what you’ll need to do is head straight to the Lysandre Cafe, through to the Labs, and then down to B3F via the elevator.

You’ll then get some dialogue and an option to ‘Release the locks’, starting a battle with Mewtwo. It is level 70 so keep that in mind, and have your party at the ready to take it on.

After getting its health low and maybe throwing in a Thunder Wave or two, try and catch it using whatever Poke Balls you have. If you have a Master Ball and would rather use that then you know you’ll get that 100% catch rate.

Once you do catch Mewtwo, you can then utilize Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y to transform it into Mega Mewtwo and enjoy some tweaked stats.
