Marathon’s Collector’s Edition looks fantastic, but check the small print before you buy

It looks like the Marathon doubters are in a bit of a pickle after the game’s pre-order trailer (which was actually leaked ahead of time) saw Bungie’s extraction shooter rocket to fifth on Steam’s chart.

As you’d expect from a game being released today, there are a few different versions you can pick up, and naturally, the Collector’s Edition is the pinnacle.

Just like other Bungie Collector’s Editions, it not only looks the part but offers up extra goodies that Marathon’s art style lovers will need to have.

There is, however, one small detail you need to take into account—there are two Collector’s Editions, with one not even including the game.

Be careful which Marathon Collector’s Edition you buy

So yes, there are in fact two Marathon Collector’s Editions available, and only one includes the game.

The $189 Collector’s Edition offers up a 1/6-scale statue of the Thief Runner Shell with fancy lights, a collectable Sekiguchi WEAVEworm, an embroidered patch, a set of runner art postcards, and unique bonus cosmetics. No game code or physical disc is in the meticulously crafted box, leaving some a little baffled.

If you want all this and to actually experience Marathon, you’ll need to opt for the $229 Collector’s Edition. This includes all of the above as well as the Deluxe Edition of the game. This is a game code, though, still no physical version here, so you can’t add another box to your on-shelf collection.

While the lack of Marathon in the ‘cheaper’ Collector’s Edition is sparking outrage by some, we read this simply as Bungie offering you more options rather than anything sinister.

Yes, paying $189 and not getting the game seems outrageous on the face of it, but the stuff you get bundled in is probably worth it for some, and saves them shelling out more cash on a copy of Marathon if they want to pick up this edition after playing for a few weeks.
