What is the plot of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle?

The game is set between the franchise’s movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and we ranked the Great Circle very highly in our 100 best adventure games of all time, just a few months after the game was released.

Set in 1937, the Architect is working at Marshall College when he gets knocked out following a break-in. The thief leaves behind a mysterious medallion, which has a symbol matching the Vatican City’s Secret Archive, with its artifacts already being investigated by German archeologist, Emmerich Voss.

This leads Jones on a worldwide adventure as he discovers that sacred sites across the world form a near-perfect circle, and that special stones at these sites are tied to ancient powers. The game follows Indy as he tries to retrieve all the stones, fighting Nazi’s and rivals along the way.

The game was a critical hit, with more than four million playing it solely on Xbox by January 2025, just a month after it was released in December.

In what is undoubtedly one of the best adventure games released in recent times, fans have praised the various puzzles and the immersive storyline, while developers Machine Games also received praise for once again appropriately using the Nazis in a video game, following their huge success with the Wolfenstein series.
