Eagles attempt at winning back-to-back Super Bowls
After a long offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles are finally getting set to make their attempt at winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Though they lost a few key players, their roster is hard to argue against as there is an unreal amount of talent throughout the whole roster. Coming off the best season of his career, Saquon Barkley will be looking to have a repeat of last season and to continue dominating the league alongside Jalen Hurts and the rest of the Eagles offense.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles star defensive back duo of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean will also be looking to continue their success from last season as they had two of the best rookie campaigns in the entire league. Up front, Jalen Carter will be the anchor of the defensive line that will hope to have similar production this season.
This is all without mentioning stars like Zach Baun, A.J. Brown, or Lane Johnson, and they already sound like one of the best teams in the league. While this is true, the Eagles unfortunately have one area in which they’re lacking. That area being the safety position.
Philly has talked about moving DeJean to safety, which will certainly help, but it leaves a lack of depth at the corner position. Rookie safety Andrew Mukuba could be the starter alongside DeJean and while he’s very talented, he’s young and question mark. After a questionable training camp and preseason that left many with unanswered questions, perhaps the best answer lies in one free agent that’s still available.
Star safety Justin Simmons is still available in free agency and could make perfect sense for Philadelphia. Though they may not necessarily need him, it would provide a lot of comfort knowing that they have depth and won’t have to worry if one of their starters goes down.
The Eagles were initially the second-favorite team to land him at +600 when he entered free agency, but now it appears they make more sense than anywhere else. Furthermore, he’s a veteran and would certainly help another playoff run. One of the worst aspects of playing rookies in the playoffs is the lack of experience which can lead to uncertainty. Simmons would, without a doubt, fix this problem, and it could be the final piece to the Eagles’ puzzle that is going back-to-back.
