Slumber Realm’s gameplay involves turn-based combat using dice to trigger equipment. As an adolescent in the 90s, some iconic memorabilia will crossover with your dreams, which is where you will fight your nightmares and upgrade your deck.

Below, we cover everything you need to know about the Slumber Realm game, so you can familiarize yourself with the dangers that dreamland will throw at you, along with how to overcome them with the mechanics on show.

What is Slumber Realm?

The game involves you fighting your character’s fears in turn-based battles determined by dice rolls. You play as a 13-year-old, so life mostly involves school, band practice, and homework. When your character goes to sleep, that’s when your Slumber Realm roguelike run starts.

You play as a brave knight, and your abilities, as well as those of your opponents, are shown as equipment cards that will attack the enemy and defend you. In the Slumber Realm demo, for example, you’re given the Training Sword, which activates this piece of equipment if you roll between a one and a five on your six-sided dice. The cards you unlock allow you to approach battles in different ways and rely on luck to hit what you need. Some of the most powerful cards are the most difficult to roll, such as the Laser Tag Blaster that deals 25 damage, but you need to roll one on your dice to activate it.

Slumber Realm features an interchanging day-and-night cycle during battles, and some equipment only triggers during day or night. At the same time, the danger meter of your opponent will increase with every switch, so you need to ensure your build is strong enough to take down hostile characters in as few turns as possible. If the value of a dice roll falls between more than one equipment card, all applicable equipment will trigger at once, which can result in an extremely powerful attack.

Each card also shows what resource it offers. You will earn resources from triggering equipment that then goes on to be used on abilities. The more resources you rack up, the more you can continue using abilities, even activating abilities more than once per turn. In the Slumber Realm demo, there’s the Guard ability that blocks two damage for the current turn, a Patch ability that adds an extra use to a piece of equipment that has a limited number of uses, and more.

To win an encounter in the Slumber Realm game, you must deplete all the enemy’s health before they eliminate you. When you come out victorious in a battle, you will be able to add new cards to your inventory. Moving to your next encounter is done along a dreamy path that leads you to a new area, such as a castle and a forest. Sticking with the theme, each location is childlike yet charming, and features enemies like a buff piece of broccoli, a skeleton playing the piano, and an angry alarm clock.

As you progress through the dreams on your way to the boss fight at the very end, you will be able to visit the market to spend the gold you earn during Slumber Realm gameplay on single-use consumable snacks to accompany your equipment and abilities. The Three Cubical Crisps, for instance, guarantees your next dice roll will be a three, while the Red Karate Belt deals one damage to your opponent after you take damage.

When you awake from your Slumber Realm roguelike run, you will have an allowance each day to decorate your very own bedroom. Purchase items from the catalogue and simply drag and drop them where you please to create a cozy space to doze off.

Slumber Realm gameplay shares many similarities with that of Slot or Not. In Slot or Not, the moves you perform in turn-based encounters are dictated by the outcome of a slot machine. You place weapons, defense, healing items, and more in the slot machine, which will show you the odds of getting each item. Pull the lever, and your character will execute the combination shown on the slot machine. After coming out on top of an encounter, you get the option to choose an item to add to the slot machine.

The progression path in Slot or Not is similar to the Slumber Realm game, too, with a dealer to visit to buy powerful trinkets, traders, and more on your way to the final boss fight. Of course, the main difference between Slumber Realm and Slot or Not is the fact that RNG is decided by dice in Slumber Realm, and a slot machine in Slot or Not. The array of items on offer in both games is meant to add some control to the chaos while contributing to the replayability factor of roguelike runs.
