Survival horror games offer some of the most adrenaline-packed, stressful experiences in the horror niche, giving psychological horror games a run for their money. If you’re looking for a spectacular horror title to get lost in this fall, you’ll find a new favorite here.

Below, you’ll find Adventure Gamers’ round-up of the scariest and best survival horror games of all time, including both legendary titles from household name franchises and indie games that deserve more love from horror fans.

10. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)

Why it’s scary: The insanity meter makes you question your reality as you play.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror game that still has a dedicated cult following, acting as many players’ first introduction to the genre, thanks to the sheer popularity it found in the online horror community.

The Dark Descent can be enjoyed on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It’s not as action-oriented as other survival horror games, but it’s still just as scary, if not more so.

9. Resident Evil (All versions) (1996-2015)

Why it’s scary: Genre-defining zombie action set in the iconic Spencer mansion.

This is technically an entry for multiple games, but Resident Evil is arguably the franchise that pioneered the survival horror genre, so the list would feel incomplete without its first entry. The original Resident Evil is a masterpiece, and its newer iterations are worth playing too.

The original 1996 version of the game can be played on PlayStation and PC, along with older consoles, while the remake can be picked up on platforms like Nintendo Switch, Wii, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

8. Look Outside (2025)

Why it’s scary: Unnerving art style and character designs in an RPG format.

Most of the titles in this list are somewhat older; Look Outside proves that there are still plenty of exceptional new survival horror games to get excited about in 2025.

This RPGMaker beauty is deeply disturbing and unsettling, set in an apartment building where something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. At the time of writing, Look Outside is currently a PC-only title, available via Steam.

7. Resident Evil 2 (Remake) (2019)

Why it’s scary: Intense gore, oppressive lighting, and the tight confines of the RPD station.

The Resident Evil franchise has had a slew of fantastic remakes – and originals, of course – but the remake that stands out as one of the best survival horror gems is the Resident Evil 2 remake. This game is action-packed yet tense, with an engaging storyline and exceptional atmosphere.

The Resident Evil 2 remake is one of the best survival horror games on Switch, along with PC, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. If you get the chance to play the original, this is also worth your time – it’s a classic.

6. Silent Hill (1999)

Why it’s scary: Limited resources, lack of vision, and psychological horror moments.

Is it easy to get your hands on a copy of Silent Hill? No, not really. Is it worth the time, effort, and money? Undoubtedly. It’s one of the most influential games in the genre, and despite the graphics seeming a little dated compared to its modern-day counterparts, it’s still utterly unsettling.

Silent Hill can, at the time of writing, only be played on the original PlayStation, meaning it’s one of the trickier games on this list to track down.

5. Dead Space (2008)

Why it’s scary: The Necromorphs, brutal gore, and intense action setpieces.

One of the biggest names in the sci-fi survival horror niche is Dead Space – and with good reason. This 2008 gem is deeply unnerving and punchy, with fast-paced combat and gristly monster designs. We also recommend the excellent 2023 remake, too.

There’s a solid remake available, but if you can play the original, it’s recommended. It’s one of the best survival horror games on Xbox 360, and it’s playable on PS3 and PC too, with the latter being accessible via Steam.

4. Silent Hill 2 (Remake) (2024)

Why it’s scary: Twisted monsters, the mind-bending state of the town, and Pyramid Head.

While the newest Silent Hill release might be getting all the love at the time of writing, it’s important not to overlook Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2. Remaking a classic is always a mammoth task, but Bloober Team managed to create a game that encapsulated the terror and beauty of the first game.

The 2024 iteration of Silent Hill 2 is one of the best survival horror games on PS5. It’s also available on PC, too.

3. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

Why it’s scary: Limited combat options, oppressive atmosphere, and a heartbreaking narrative. Also, Pyramid Head (yes, he’s so scary we’ve included him twice).

No, you’re not seeing double – we’ve included Silent Hill 2 twice, technically. The remake is spectacular, but if you’re willing to go through the effort of getting hold of the original game, it’s well worth it. This is one of the best survival horror titles in history, with a twisted story, gnarly monsters, and a beautifully rich atmosphere.

You can play Silent Hill 2 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. Prices are quite high for physical copies, so it’s worth looking at second-hand sites and local game stores to get a good price.

2. Silent Hill f (2025)

Why it’s scary: Overwhelming atmosphere, unsettling monsters, and a disturbing, melancholic story.

Silent Hill f is one of the newer titles on this survival horror games list, but it’s already had a monumental impact on the wider Silent Hill franchise. Taking place in rural 1960s Japan, this game is deeply atmospheric and unsettling, with a roster of genuinely disgusting monsters to run away from.

While it’s drastically different from other Silent Hill games, it’s also arguably one of the best survival horror games in the series. Silent Hill f is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and it’s unmissable for any horror fanatic.

1. Alien: Isolation (2014)

Why it’s scary: The Xenomorph, need we really say more?

Alien: Isolation isn’t just a solid survival horror title – it’s undeniably one of the best horror games of all time. This sci-fi horror features a truly threatening enemy that tracks and hunts the player, adding to the already tense atmosphere on board the Sevastopol.

Alien: Isolation is one of the best PS4 survival horror games. It’s also available on PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

Survival horror games can fall into a variety of subgenres and different niches, with some leaning heavily on action sequences and others taking a subtler approach to terror. The majority of the games in this list are part of a wider franchise, which are all worth taking the time to explore and get scared by.
