The RogueJack21 Steam release is upon us, and fans of Balatro may be about to find a new roguelike deckbuilder obsession to sink their teeth into.

As a blackjack-inspired deckbuilder, you build and upgrade your deck and face a variety of opponents across different casinos. There’s a boss at the end of every casino table, which you must defeat to beat the game and get your own back on the relentless House. We’ve got all the latest RogueJack21 news, so you can prepare for your first playthrough.

What is RogueJack21?

The RogueJack21 demo begins by selecting your starting deck and difficulty level. You can even refine your deck by removing two suits from your deck. Your journey starts in Noir City, but each map is procedurally generated, containing secret events, dealers with rigged decks, and a range of challenges to test your luck. This is presented as a progression tree you must work through on your journey to the final boss.

In blackjack style, you start by drawing two cards, then you either hit to draw another card or stand to end your turn. The goal is to get as close to 21 as possible without busting or being beaten by the dealer. After drawing your first two cards, you have limited uses of a double down feature, automatically drawing another card, and forcing you to stand. The difference in RogueJack21 gameplay is that your opponent doesn’t have to stop when they reach 17, as each character you face will have a different number they will stand on. This is because the winner of the round deals damage to the opponent equal to their total hand value.

If your health bar at the bottom of the screen hits zero, it’s game over, but even if you take damage and win the duel, all the health you lost along the way will be restored. There’s also a luck meter accompanying your health bar, so if you get a blackjack, your luck will increase by 21%, meaning there will then be a plus 21% chance that the next card drawn from your pile is what’s needed to score another blackjack. If you win with a perfect 21 in the RogueJack21 game, your cards will trigger their blackjack effect, as will winning a round while in a double down. Each card has its own unique Blackjack effect with powerful bonuses. You can check your draw pile to see what’s coming next and develop your strategy around this intel.

When you win a battle, RogueJack21 features chips and the ability to select a new card to add to your deck. Cards can range from base options or cards infused with a Blackjack effect. The Crystal card, for example, regenerates health and will be visible when on the top of your deck. If you bust while drawing it, its Blackjack effect will activate at the end of the turn, and the card is permanently destroyed.

With the chips you earn, you’ll mainly spend them at the store owned by the House’s Merchant. From the store, you can buy trinkets and card packs to make your deck more powerful. The full RogueJack21 game is slated to have over 100 trinkets. Examples of trinkets on offer include Cracked Glass, which, after the end of a turn, if your hand contains one or more Clubs cards, it will activate the blackjack effect of a random non-Clubs card in your hand. The Fortune Ring adds 50 luck if you push with a Lucky Draw, and a Transfusion Bag sees you regenerate health equal to your total Spades value on a losing round if your health is below 50%.

As for the card upgrade booster packs you can purchase from the store, these contain card upgrades, which you can apply to any card in your deck to upgrade it permanently. Coupons also permanently grant you a bonus for an entire run. What makes RogueJack21’s store mechanics stand out from similar games is the fact that you can lock items that you would like to purchase to keep them in the store rotation for your next visit. What’s more, you will be presented with opportunities to visit the VIP lounge during your RogueJack21 gambling run to get your hands on more rare items to further enhance your synergies, as well as make decisions in limited-time events that can change the course of your run.

It’s expected that the RogueJack21 release date will be in December 2025. However, a specific day is yet to be confirmed by developer Zandbox Studio. Back in September, the demo received a major update based on player feedback. This made changes to how trinket synergies work with each suit of cards, added new content in the form of a fresh Silver card upgrade, and more trinkets and coupons to experiment with.

In the RogueJack21 demo, there’s just one region, but the paths on the map in that region are randomized with every run. The amount of time it takes to beat the game depends on how strong a deck you’re able to build against your opponents. Don’t forget, there’s a range of trinkets and cards to experiment with, so even if you manage to beat the boss at the end of the table, there’s an abundance of replayability in the demo alone.

How does RogueJack21 compare to Balatro?

The main difference between the RogueJack21 roguelike mechanics and Balatro is the fact that RogueJack21 is focused on the rules of blackjack, while Balatro adopts Poker-style rules. RogueJack21 also uses trinkets to build synergies and sees players progress along a chosen path of evolving casinos. Apart from that, RogueJack21 is very similar to Balatro because they’re both roguelike deckbuilders centered around a card game, contain randomized runs, and their visuals are even alike.
